Why Dating and Job Hunting Both Suck

Is it just me or does job hunting feel a lot like dating?

You’re ghosted often.
You get your hopes up only to be let down.
You start questioning if there’s something wrong with you.

I like how Chelsea Handler puts it.

Dating is like job hunting. Sometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince, or in job terms, a position that doesn’t make you want to gouge your eyes out.

My best advice?

First, accept as much as you can that a lot of this just sucks. Do your best to find any small piece that you enjoy and hold to that. That’s terrible advice, but it feels real. And important.

Second, you can’t control if you get the job, but you can control how you show up and what you learn from every encounter. So learn. One way to distance yourself from the experience is to treat job hunting like a numbers game. So track how many people you’ve talked to, how many apps you submitted today, how many responded, etc.

And most importantly, know that there’s nothing wrong with you. You’re awesome. The market is weird right now, and it’s saturated with a lot of talented people. Know that you’re one of them.

Good luck job hunting, and reach out if I can lend you a hand or offer some support. Before you go, I’d like to tell you how I made the most of being laid off.
